Featured This Summer At Belleayre Festival
Highmount, NY Good times will be the theme of the 2009 Belleayre Music Festival at Belleayre Mountain in Highmount.
The entire season¹s lineup will feature performances aimed a raising spirits during a trying economic period. Among the headliners will be the Original Wailers, Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Abba The Tour. This year¹s opera Die Fledermaus, even has a comic theme.
The good times theme extends to the special value tickets that will make top-quality entertainment affordable at very reasonable prices.
The season kicks off on Saturday, July 4 at 8 p.m. with a rousing free show of patriotic tunes by the West Point Band Jazz Knights.
The Jazz Knights present the best in big band favorites, popular music and original compositions. After the concert, a spectacular fireworks display will cap the evening.
Arguably the world¹s foremost anthropologist and archivist of the Great American Songbook, Michael Feinstein has dedicated his career to preserving, protecting and promoting the work of the great tunesmiths, from Gershwin, Porter and Berlin to lesser known craftsmen. He will perform on Saturday, July 11 at 8 p.m.
Belleayre Festival originals Maestro John Covelli and fellow keyboard whiz Justin Kolb will present an evening of classical favorites in a special fund-raising event on Saturday, July 18.
Donald Westwood, director of the Belleayre Festival Opera, puts his unique stamp on Die Fledermaus (The Bat) on Saturday, July 25 at 8 p.m. is an operetta composed by Johann Strauss II to a German libretto by Carl Haffner and Richard Genée.
Donald Westwood continues his tradition of bringing classic tales to the stage as he introduces children to opera in highly entertaining fashion presenting Humpty Dumpty on Sunday, July 26 at 1 p.m. in a free performance.
Ladysmith Black Mambazo takes the Belleayre stage on Saturday, Aug. 1 at 8 p.m. represents the traditional culture of South Africa and is regarded as the country¹s cultural emissary at home and around the world. The band earned international acclaim when its sounds became an integral part of Paul Simon¹s groundbreaking ³Graceland² album.
Argentine Tango pianist Pablo Zeigler has a playing style, both sharply percussive and metallically lyrical, that is instantly recognizable. He opens the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series on Friday, Aug. 7 at 8 p.m. Ziegler is the leading exponent of nuevo tango, thanks to the skills and reputation he garnered while working extensively with Astor Piazzolla in the 1980s.
Leny Andrade has long been regarded as Brazil¹s best jazz singer, building a reputation on her outstanding improvisational abilities. She returns to the Belleayre Jazz Club on Saturday, Aug. 8 at 8 p.m. During the 1980s and 1990s, she divided time between her native country and the U.S., where she enhanced her status with several samba-jazz records, including classics like ³Luz Neon.²
Kevin Mahogany sets up shop in the intimate setting of the Belleayre Jazz Club on Friday, Aug. 14 at 8 p.m. Kevin is well known for his scat singing and his talents helped him rise to prominence in the 1990s. He gained additional notoriety in Robert Alman¹s film ³Kansas City,² in which he played a character based on jazz legend Big Joe Turner.
From playing alongside legends like Art Blakey and Dave Holland, to his long-running work as band leader on the Jay Leno show, Kevin Eubanks has gained acclaim for a guitar style that incorporates the likes of Wes Montgomery, Jimi Hendrix and John McLaughlin. His show wraps up the Catskill Mountain Jazz Series on Saturday, Aug. 15 at 8 p.m.
The Original Wailers, featuring Al Anderson and Earl ³Way² Lindo, keep alive the timeless reggae beats popularized by Bob Marley and helped sell millions of albums during the last four decades. These two founding members of The Wailers toured with Bob Marley until his death and continue to spread his music throughout the world. The will play Belleayre on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 8 p.m.
Uncle Rock¹s Family Party will offer musical fun for all ages in a free concert on Sunday, Aug. 23 at 1 p.m. Uncle Rock has been dazzling audiences of all ages with his inspiring music that seamlessly bridges the gap between adult and children¹s music.
Step back in time on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 8 p.m. when Mary Wilson, the only original member of The Supremes who remained with the group from its founding until its disbandment, brings her high-energy show to the mountain. Mary sang on a dozen number one hits with the band in the 1960s and ¹70s and continues to bring those memorable tunes to life with a busy performing schedule.
The 2009 season finishes in fun, hit-filled fashion when Abba The Tour visits on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. Audiences sing, dance and have the time of their lives as this Abba cover band (featuring several original members of Abba¹s performing band), offers perfectly executed renditions of more than 20 of this legendary¹s bands greatest hits.

Belleayre Mountain is located in the heart of New York's Catskill Mountain region. The area is located just off Route 28 and is 37 miles west of Thruway Exit 19 at Kingston; 55 miles southeast of Oneonta on Route 28; 40 miles from the Route 17 exit at Roscoe; and 95 miles southwest of Albany and just two hours north of NYC.
