Rock and Roll Hall of Famers, The Temptations and the Four Tops were the Kings of Motown and defined the soul sound of the '60s. They owned the top spots on the best-seller charts for more than a decade and still tour the world rocking audiences wherever they perform. Together these two super-groups have created one of the greatest shows in rock-and-roll history.
The Temptations
For more than 40 years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular music with a series of smash hits, and sold-out performances throughout the world. “The crowds are bigger, the sales are sizzling,” says one industry report. “The outpouring of affection for this super-group has never been greater.”
The history of The Temptations is the history of contemporary American pop. An essential component of the original Motown machine, that amazing engine invented by Berry Gordy, The Temps began their musical life in Detroit in the early '60s. It wasn’t until 1964 however, that the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do The Things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An avalanche of hits followed, many of which…”My Girl,” for instance…attained immortality. “It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready,” “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg,” “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep,” “I Wish It Would Rain”…the hits kept coming. The Temptations continue to be the quintessential Motown vocal group delivering the intricate harmonies of street-corner serenaders and the polished choreography of a '60s soul revue.
The Four Tops
The Four Tops have been thrilling audiences with their infectious blend of pure vocal power and sweet harmonies since 1954. The Tops deserve to be recognized both for their musical achievements and their longevity. On the latter count, the group performed for over four decades together without a single change in personnel - a record of constancy that is mind-boggling in the notoriously changeable world of popular music. As for their accomplishments, The Four Tops cut some of Motown's most memorable singles during the label's creative zenith, including "Baby I Need Your Loving," "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)," "It's the Same Old Song," "Reach Out I'll Be There," "Standing in the Shadows of Love" and "Bernadette." The Four Tops' greatest records were recorded at Motown with the in-house songwriting and production team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland. |
